Oilers Decline To Match Offer Sheets By Blues On Philip Broberg, Dylan Holloway

The Blues have officially pulled off successful offer sheets on both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg. The Oilers had seven days to match St. Louis’ offer to both players and have decided to pass on both instances. Except there is more than meets the eye here so we’ll go over all of it.

The Oilers released a statement on why they declined to match on both players:

The Edmonton Oilers announced this morning they will not match contract offer sheets presented by the St. Louis Blues to forward Dylan Holloway and defenceman Philip Broberg.

“As per NHL compensation guidelines, the Oilers will receive the Blues’ second and third-round selections in the 2025 NHL Draft.”

“In a separate transaction with St. Louis, the Oilers have acquired the rights to defenceman Paul Fischer as well the Blues’ third-round selection in the 2028 NHL Draft in exchange for future considerations.”

“Fischer is an unsigned selection from the 2023 NHL Draft (138th overall) entering his second season with Notre Dame (NCAA).”

As you have noticed by the statement, it appears the Oilers got two more assets as a threat that they would match unless they were further compensated. I guess it worked but I would have called their bluff; I guess that’s a story for another day. At the end of the day, Edmonton winds up with the Blues 2025 second rounder, third round, 2026 third rounder, and prospect Fischer.

I guess I’m just confused as to why the Oilers executed the Cody Ceci trade if they weren’t going to match. Why dump Ceci now if the plan was to let the Blues have both guys? That part remains an unanswered question during the aftermath of all of this.
