New England Patriots 2024 NFL Training Camp Preview

Bill Belichick is out, Jerod Mayo is in. The problem is the team still probably stinks outside of a handful of players. What should we expect from the New England Patriots as they open the 2024 NFL Training Camp period? Let’s have a quick chat about what you need to know.

Three Position Battles To Watch:

1: Kicker: Joey Slye, Chad Ryland

Sorry in advance but this battle of kickers is actually worth talking about. You could argue that Chad Ryland was the worst kicker in the league last year. However, we’ve seen young kickers turn it around before. He made big kicks during his collegiate career. Joey Slye is the veteran competition. We’ll see who wins the job for Week 1.

2: Quarterback: Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, Joe Milton, Bailey Zappe

There is a QB battle in New England but it doesn’t totally feel like a pure battle. Jacoby Brissett will open the season as the starter. It’s a matter of for how long. Drake Maye might be better served sitting all year. You would have to imagine that Milton will be the developmental third option with Zappe eventually being waived.

3: Guard: Cole Strange, Sidy Sow, Layden Robinson, Atonio Mafi, Nick Leverett

The Cole Strange pick has not worked out (to the surprise of no one). We’ll see if any of these young guards can actually take a step forward. I like Sow’s chances especially to do so. Robinson is a rookie out of Texas A&M who could force his way into the lineup eventually.

Rookie To Watch: Ja’Lynn Polk / Javon Baker

I just listed both because these are the two new rookie weapons in New England. I’ve talked so much about this rookie class already. It will be interesting to see who long it takes both of them to make an impact.

Ready to Breakout: Keion White

It feels like the White pick is going to be a hit. White was a mystery coming out of college. Could a former converted tight end at Old Dominion really become a dominant defensive lineman? It was a fair question to ask. The stat sheet wasn’t overwhelming as a rookie but he certainly passed the eye ball test. I expect a big step here.

Fantasy Sleeper: Jaheim Bell

Hunter Henry is the obvious choice but he’s also the boring pick. What if rookie Jaheim Bell snags the pass catching tight end job? Probably unlikely right away but it could happen down the line. Bell was a fascinating gadget guy in college who can do a bit of everything. Certainly, a name to monitor this preseason to see where things stand.
