Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson becomes the second known head coach in the National Football League to test positive for Covid-19, per Tom Pelissero.
Doug Pederson has been a very successful NFL Head Coach, most notably leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory against the New England Patriots. With Doug Pederson contracting Covid-19 it makes me wonder if there’s any chance of having a season. A bubble approach simply is not practical for the NFL. There are too many people, the reason the NBA can do it is A. There are only playoff teams and teams within reach of a playoff spot, and B. The rosters in the NBA are much smaller than an NFL roster.
A head coach getting Covid-19 adds multiple complications to a team that wouldn’t be an issue if it was a position coach. It’s no surprise that the head coach runs the show for a team, that’s why some people are better coordinators than head coaches. The Philadelphia Eagles put out the following statement on Twitter:
We received confirmation this evening that Head Coach Doug Pederson tested positive for COVID-19. Pederson is asymptomatic and doing well. He is currently in self-quarantine and in communication with the team’s medical staff. The organization is following the protocals established by the NFL and the NFLPA. Any individual in close contact with Pederson at our facility have been notified and will continue with daily testing procedures and compliance with all protocols before returning to the facility.
It is unknown who will be taking Pederson’s place while he is in self-isolation. A staff member who was in close contact with Doug Pederson was also sent home, per Tim McManus.
