Shea Theodore: What Does Possible Contract Extension With The Golden Knights Look Like?

What are the Golden Knights going to do with Shea Theodore? It’s decision time before decision time really. Theodore will enter the final year of his contract with the VGK, which will pay him an AAV of $5.2 million. Can Vegas get the veteran blue liner extended and if not what are the alternatives?

The salary cap jail that teams are in is about to end. The cap is expected to go way up over the next several years. It’s at $88 million right now. All indications are that it will be over $100 million within 2-3 years. With another cap increase coming Vegas realistically should be able to afford Theo’s next deal. Yes, he’s going to need a raise but the cap increase can be dedicated to him.

Keep in mind that Noah Hanifin just signed an extension for $7.35 million per season. Is it really going to be difficult to get Theodore to sign a deal in that neighborhood? That’s the question Kelly McCrimmon and the rest of the front office needs to be asking themselves. In reality, Theodore should be happy in Vegas. He’s already won a Stanley Cup there and he’s going to pocket far more of his earnings because of the no-state tax.

Theodore’s name has popped up in the rumor mill. Some insiders have attached his name to a possible Mitch Marner trade. I just don’t see how moving Theodore makes any sense or at least can’t be the preferred option. Having Theodore, Hanifin, and Alex Pietrangelo on the blue line is what makes this team so good. Why would you even consider breaking that up given the success of the team?

Why The Golden Knights Need To Trade Zach Whitecloud

No, Vegas doesn’t have to get Theodore extended tomorrow but the longer they wait the more the price tag could rise. It’s something Vegas should take care of early if they’re smart and able to. The cap is going up and any raise Theodore requires should be allocated to him first.
