DJ Burns Jr. was a cult hero during NC State’s deep run during March Madness. Does Burn actually have a real NBA future or will he have to stick to his vending machine business? That’s exactly what we’re here to talk about. Here is your DJ Burns 2024 NBA Draft Profile.

Height: 6’.9″ (Was not invited to the combine so we do not have official measurements)

Weight: 230

Age: 24 in October

Position: PF/C

Burns played college ball for five years. Three of those years were at Winthrop. Burns, of course, made more of a name for himself the last two years with the Wolfpack. Burns goes out on a high note averaging 12.9 points, four rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 0.6 blocks per game. That’s while converting 53.1% from the field and 68% from the strip.

Strengths:

Everyone is into different things. I think we can all come to agreement on one thing. That left hand is sexy. For a big fella, the guy has soft touch around the rim. Anything going left, he’s cash money in the bank. Get the guy post touches and he will convert.

A lot of the highlights here are going to look relatively similar. Back to the basket, walk down a weaker defender, cash money with the left hand.

That’s a big body too. He gets the wrong matchup in the post it’s over. Left hand in the bank for a score. That’s a big boy to deal with and he uses that size to his advantage.

Weaknesses:

We can sit here and nitpick Burns’ game forever. Let’s just go over some of the quick spark notes.

He’s a slower paced player and may struggle getting up and down the court.

He’s a non-shooter outside of the paint with zero production from 3.

The rebounding numbers are just not there and he’s a negative defender. No real rim protection and probably is best suited as a non-shooting four while playing with a big stretch five who can protect the rim.

Projection: Undrafted

The shades of Zach Randolph are there but I’m not sure he’s nearly as nasty or skilled. Seems to be on a Kenny Lofton Jr. type of vibe but even Lofton had more scoring range than Burns.

Burns won’t get drafted but he deserves a shot to latch onto a roster with a two-way contract. The post-scoring is there. If he can develop other areas of his game, I wouldn’t count out Burns having a shot to stick in the league.
