The first NFL player has opted out of the 2020 NFL Season but it’s for an amazing reason. Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif became the first player to announce that they will not be playing in the 2020 NFL Season. Tardif was born in Quebec, Canada and he played college football at McGill University which is again in Quebec, Canada. Tardif graduated from Medical School and has been nicknamed “The Doctor” by some fans. While he won’t be on the offensive line for 2020 he will be on the front lines caring for patients during the Covid-19 pandemic as he said in a social media post.

I respect Laurent Duvernay-Tardif so much for this move. He not only understands the severity of the pandemic but he is going to be taking a risk by being on the front line. Earlier in the off-season Tardif began working on the front line and I have gained a great deal of respect for him because of that. Tardif as said the following on social media:

Being at the frontline during this offseason has given me a different perspective on this pandemic and the stress it puts on individuals and our healthcare system. I cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport hat I love. If I am to take risks, I will do it caring for patients

That final sentence is what really spoke to me. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif could be playing football and making millions of dollars to do it. Yet he’s not, he’s being incredible selfless by sacrificing his opportunity to play in the NFL to care for patients. It’s small acts like this that make professional athletes role models.
