Have we seen the last of Randy Gregory in the NFL? It sounds like that’s the case. The NFL has a new substance abuse policy where positive marijuana tests will no longer result in suspensions. However, it does not provide amnesty for players who failed under the old system. Gregory is falling victim to this.
Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has reported that the Cowboys have all but ‘given up hope’ that they will ever get Gregory back on the field:
“Two months later comes word that the Cowboys have “all but given up hope” of Gregory being reinstated from his indefinite suspension. Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram doesn’t elaborate on the reasons for the team’s pessimism in his report.”
Gregory, 27, missed the entire 2019 season via suspension. The former 2nd round pick from Nebraska has failed the substance abuse policy on 4 separate occasions. Gregory hasn’t played since the 2018 season where he actually played in all 16 games.
Dallas selected Gregory in the 2nd round of the 2015 NFL Draft and they have not gotten their money’s worth. 28 career games and 7 sacks later, Randy Gregory will go down as a bust. It seems like, as of now, we have seen the last of him in the NFL but never say never.
Defensive end is actually the one need on the Cowboys roster. DeMarcus Lawrence is a stud but they don’t have much depth behind him. Losing Robert Quinn via free agency stings too. Oddly enough Aldon Smith will play a role on this defense somehow. So will rookie Bradlee Anae who Dallas probably has high hopes for.
