The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and safety Antoine Winfield Jr have agreed to a 4-year extension worth $84.1 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
According to Schefter, Winfield is the first-ever safety to hold the highest-paid defensive back spot. The deal also has $45 million guaranteed for the young safety.
The deal comes after the Buccaneers placed the franchise tag on the safety back in early March.
The safety has put out a post on Instagram of a video he recorded on May 20th, 2023, talking about becoming the highest-paid [safety/defensive-back] in the league and being able to speak it into existence. Winfield captioned the post, “U N P R E C E N T E D.”
Winfield, 25, has been with Tampa since was drafted by them in the 2020 NFL Draft with the 45th overall pick. In his time with the Buccaneers, Winfield helped the team win Super Bowl LV; also becoming a one-time Pro-Bowler and a First-Team All-Pro last season.
Winfield Jr had three interceptions, six sacks, six forced fumbles, and 122 combined tackles last season. His 122 combined tackles were the fourth-highest for a defensive back in the NFC and six-highest in the league. He has registered seven interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, 15 sacks, and 384 combined tackles in his professional career so far.
In his professional career, Winfield has yet to miss the playoffs and has been a key part of the Buccaneer’s defense and will continue to be with his contract extension.
The Buccaneers have re-signed quarterback Baker Mayfield, keeping another key player who helped Tampa make a run into the NFC Divisional round of the playoffs last season.
