Cody Kessler 2.0. That’s what I see off the rip. Slovis is a human evolution 10% better version of that when I watch him. Slovis got his career started at USC. His early-day Trojan stuff is the best stuff you’re going to see. As a freshman in 2019, 71.9%, 8.9 yards per attempt, 30 touchdowns, nine picks. What if I told you he never came close to those numbers again? Because that’s exactly what happened.
Maybe losing Graham Harrell was a killer. I’m not sure we’ll ever figure it out. Whatever happened, Slovis became a check-down Nancy after that. Never had big arm power but it was like Derek Carr became his favorite cult hero and patterned his game after him. Take care of the ball and never push it down the field.
His play at Pitt was terrible . Made Kenny Pickett look even better than he even was. Averaged 6.5 yards per attempt as a 5th year player at BYU. It’s just not good enough. His pure accuracy stuff seemed to get worse and worse every year. That’s while being a check-down Nancy. 57.5% while playing for BYU is so brutal.
The crazy thing is he’s not totally untalented. Had an underrated Combine . Ran a 4.55 and just doesn’t appear to be a bad athlete. For whatever reason, it’s like his brain short circuits and his pure arm power isn’t enough to overcome it. Was he hit too many times? Some of his throws at the Combine were off by ten miles. Doesn’t have bad footwork either. Checks in at 6-foot-2, 223, and really isn’t that small. What’s even crazier is if you dropped Slovis back when Matt Leinart played, he might be an upgrade. He’s a better athlete than Leinart. Not by a drastic amount though.
Former three star guy out of the state of Arizona. Did wind up at USC for a reason though. Had some intriguing stuff during his time playing in the PrepStar All-Western Region and Sports360AZ circuit.
I don’t know what you’re supposed to do with this guy. He’s a USC product child who might make it as a backup but not someone you can even prioritize on draft day.
