Arik Armstead Felt “Disrespected” By 49ers Contract Offer

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead felt disrespected by the teams final contract offer before he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he said on his Third and Long podcast.

Quote from Arik Armstead’s “Third and Long” podcast:

(The 49ers) extended an offer to me of $6 million for a one-year deal with incentives to go up to, like, $8 (million),” Armstead said on the latest edition of his “Third and Long” podcast. “When they sent that over, I did feel extremely disrespected. I don’t feel that that level of compensation is nowhere near the type of player that I am.”

Armstead, 30, registered five sacks and 27 total tackles the 2023-24 regular season in 12 games for the 49ers after missing the last five games of the season due to a torn meniscus. Armstead had 11 tackles in San Fran’s playoff journey last season.

I wanted to sign a four-year, $80-million contract. That was the goal of mine (at the beginning of the season),” Armstead said. “That’s the type of player I feel that I am. And players who are on my caliber, that’s what they make.

In the end, Armstead didn’t re-sign with the 49ers and opted instead to sign with the Jaguars. He signed a 3-year deal worth $51 million to play across the country. Getting close to the contract he wanted before the start of last season and a clearly better contract than what the 49ers offered.

The 49ers are in cap space hell trying to maintain one of the better rosters in the league, with the likes of Nick Bosa, Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle, who all have a big contracts. Luckily, the 49ers seem to have their quarterback for the foreseeable future in Brock Purdy on a rookie contract.

The San Francisco 49ers will be a lot thinner of the defensive line of the ball, as they also lost defensive end Chase Young to the New Orleans Saints.
