Don’t Eat The Cheese! 2024 Fantasy Baseball: Starting Pitchers

Slowly and surely Vendetta Sports Media will establish itself as the premier go to site for fantasy sports. You can laugh at that statement all you want but the evidence doesn’t lie. I own fantasy hockey (RIP Sean Allen). Matthew Berry was embarrassed. In 2024 we’re throwing our hat in the fantasy baseball realm and the Don’t Eat The Cheese series will return to cover MLB.

For now, I don’t have anything against ESPN’s fantasy baseball department. Time will tell if that changes. In the meantime, I’m just going to give you busts. Any player that’s ranked too high inside the top 50, we’re going to expose them together.

*Link to ESPN rankings. They constantly change so don’t shoot the messenger if they’re updated after publication.

Pablo Lopez (Minnesota Twins) -SP6, 15th overall

Don’t get me wrong, I like Pablo Lopez. This ranking is just crazy. He’s heading into his age 28 season with six years of experience under his belt. I say that because he has 39 career wins.

39… and it’s not like they’re going to be served on a platter while playing for the Twins.

Two things can be true. Lopez is very good but let’s stop pretending like the Twins didn’t get absolutely robbed in that trade. The K numbers have never been elite either. Last year was a career high 10.9. If you’re telling me Lopez is one of the six best pitchers in the sport, then you definitely need a reality check.

George Kirby (Seattle Mariners) -SP11, 27th overall

I like Kirby. This is just a bit too rich for me. Are we really ready to say he’s a borderline top ten starter in baseball? I need one more electric season to go there. Really good at preventing homers but doesn’t strike a ton of guys out. Sat at 8.1 per 9 last year. This one is more of a nitpick. I like Kirby at like pick 60. Not inside the top 30.

Tyler Glasnow (Los Angeles Dodgers) -SP12, 32nd overall

This ranking is insane. Has nothing to do with talent. The guy threw five innings last year and nobody was surprised. Glasnow, 30, has two seasons ever crossing the 100 inning threshold. He’s never on the mound. Why would I even consider investing in someone this high that never pitches? It makes no sense. Light some prayer candles. I don’t know what else to tell you on this one.

Freddy Peralta (Milwaukee Brewers) -SP14, 39th overall

Do I really want Brewers stock? They’re clearly in rebuild mode and taking a pitcher on a bad team this high is a recipe for disaster. Last year was really a career year for Peralta. Should we expect more of the same? The K numbers have normally been good. Just has never stayed healthy either. Last year he made 30 starts. He’s got one other season more than 20. Proceed with caution.
