Bengals trade Joe Mixon to Texans

The running back carousel continues! Instead of releasing him–which was originally reported–the Cincinnati Bengals have traded Joe Mixon to the Houston Texans, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport first reported Tuesday.

At the time of this publishing, the compensation heading back to Cincinnati has not been disclosed.

It was reported Monday, the first day of the NFL’s early-tampering period, that the Bengals would be waiving Joe Mixon while subsequently finding his replacement, former Colts running back Zack Moss, on a two-year deal.

Though the Bengals likely made the smarter decision by trading Mixon for at least some draft compensation and not losing him for nothing. He will effectively replace Devin Singletary, who signed a two-year deal with the New York Giants on Monday, alongside Dameon Pierce.

Mixon, 27, recorded 257 carries for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns while adding 52 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns through the air in 2023. He had just one 100-yard rushing game last season, but scored at least one touchdown in nine of his final 11 games, where he averaged 60.7 rushing yards and 4.8 yards per touch. Mixon a one-time Pro Bowler (2021) after totaling career highs in rushing yards (1,205) and rushing touchdowns (13).

The Bengals will be charged with $2.8 million in dead cap, which isn’t an excessive amount. He will have a $6.1 million cap hit for the 2024 season, the final year of his contract, including a $3.0 million roster bonus that fully guarantees on March 18, per Spotrac. He also has $4 million in incentives tied to rushing yards, yards from scrimmage, total touchdowns and a pro-bowl appearance.

Mixon will now go playing behind Joe Burrow to C.J. Stroud–two effective, but different offenses with two excellent quarterbacks. Do you think this is a good move for Houston? Let us know in the comments!
