UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley wants to headline UFC 306 at The Sphere in Las Vegas. If he gets his wish, his opponent would be Merab Dvalishvili.
O’Malley discussed headlining UFC 306 on The Pat McAfee Show.
“Merab 100-percent could be next,” O’Malley said. “If Merab is next, I’d love to do it at The Sphere in (Las) Vegas. If Ilia (Topuria) is next, I’d love to do it in Spain. I am not ducking either of them. I don’t care. I called out Ilia because he is scarier than Merab.
“Merab is a very, very dangerous opponent. He has a crazy gas tank. Name his last three fights. You couldn’t. He is boring. He is not a f*****g superstar, but he has a ten-fight win streak and he has done it so many times that there is something to it. It is completely opposite of my style. My style is striking, standup, fun to watch, quick, fast. He is so boring and takes people down so there is something there. People want to see me lose because I am the f*****g man. I get it, they want to see me lose. So they are like, ‘Put Merab on him.’ If that’s next, cool. UFC, we will talk soon and figure it out.”
O’Malley has made his desires clear since defending the bantamweight title against Marlon Vera at UFC 299. Ideally, he wants to fight Ilia Topuria in Spain; however, he is willing to fight Dvalishvili. Now, he has stated the date and location for a potential fight against Dvalishvili.
UFC 306 will take place at The Sphere in Las Vegas. The card will be the UFC’s Mexcian Independence Day event and is being advertised as the best live combat sports event of all time.
It is difficult to predict how the UFC will book the UFC 306 main event. Ideally, a Mexican champion will headline the event. That would point to UFC women’s flyweight champion Alexa Grasso. With Grasso coaching The Ultimate Fighter against Valentina Shevchenko, it seems like that trilogy will take place at UFC 306. Although, it is hard to imagine that fight will headline a pay-per-view considering the rematch was on a Fight Night. That makes it more likely that it serves as a co-main event.
If Grasso and Shevchenko are the co-main event, no Mexican contender is in a position to fight for the belt. That could open the door for the UFC to make O’Malley the main event.
Despite interest in fighting Topuria, it seems like O’Malley will be booked against Dvalishvili. Topuria didn’t seem interested in the fight and told O’Malley to fight Dvalishvili. Plus, UFC CEO Dana White said Dvalishvili will get the next bantamweight title shot.
