NaVorro Bowman. Now that’s a throwback and a name I haven’t heard in forever. Apparently, he’s back now. Jim Harbaugh needed a linebacker coach after taking the job in Los Angeles with the Chargers. He got one in Bowman and will task the duties to one of his former players that he coached in San Francisco.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
From 2011-2014, Bowman made the All-Pro team in every single season that he was coached by Harbaugh. Bowman ended up playing seven seasons for the 49ers and had a hell of a career. The former Penn State product concluded his career with the Raiders in 2017.
The timing of it is kinda funny. His former team is in Las Vegas trying to win a Super Bowl. Meanwhile, those are the two teams that Bowman ultimately played for.
The job with the Chargers will be Bowman’s first NFL opportunity. He spent last season as a defensive assistant with the University of Maryland. Bowman was born in Maryland so it makes sense that he went back there to get his coaching start.
Who knows what the future holds. However, it’s worth noting that the last 49ers linebacker that got into coaching was Demeco Ryans. Now he’s the leader of the Texans and turning that franchise around fast. Maybe one day Bowman will follow a similar path. For now, it’s a nice add to the room for the Harbaugh staff.
