Rhys Hoskins Signs Two-Year Deal With Milwaukee Brewers

Rhys Hoskins is signing a two-year, $34 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan confirmed Tuesday evening. The longtime Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman is moving on to greener pastures after many years in Red, though it’s worth noting that he could very well re-enter free agency next winter.

The Brew Crew clearly believes Hoskins is 100 percent healthy. He tragically went down during Spring Training with an ACL injury in March 2023. When healthy, he is a productive bat, and from 2017 to moments ago, a fan favorite for the 2022 NL Champions. In his last full season, the Sacramento, Calif., native homered 30 times, knocked in 79 runs and sported a slash line of .246/.332/.462 with an OPS+ of 123. Weeks after rumors of selling, the NL Central winners make a big splash and look poised to repeat.

Hoskins will clearly replace Carlos Santana at first base, with the 37-year-old a free agent. He’s gonna be asked to be an impact bat in the heart of the Milwaukee lineup. Former NL MVP Christian Yelich enjoyed a bounceback year in 2023 to go with strong contributions from Willy Adames and William Contreras.

They are not getting any younger, but this group still has more than enough to contend. They were the first victims of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ improbable run to the World Series last Fall. Why not try to make another push when your rivals are in no man’s land?

No More Fun In Philly?

A total of $17 million per season is a lot of money, and it’s a number Hoskins’ former team couldn’t afford to spend. Philadelphia owns the fourth-highest payroll in baseball at over $238 million, according to Spotrac.

It’s clear the front office has priorities in different places, with pitching still a work in progress. As soon as Bryce Harper started playing filling in at first there seemed to be a pathway to life without Hoskins. However, that is now a true reality as the man they drafted all the way back in 2014 is no longer wearing red. Expect a large ovation for him once he returns to Citizens Bank Park.

Rhys Hoskins is starting a new chapter with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is getting a nice deal after missing all of 2023 with injury.
