2024 East-West Shrine Bowl: East Team Game Notes

I’m tired and for some reason, the NFL can’t figure out that scheduling the East-West Shrine game the same week as the Senior Bowl is completely idiotic. The East-West game doesn’t even have televised practices that we have access to. It’s been a long week, I don’t have enough help, and I’m going to do the best I can here.

I apologize for being late with this post. My blogging team stinks so I’m playing hero ball for literally every sport. Also, since this event is poorly run I couldn’t even get access to a box score until the following day. I could have released the post but don’t think it has the same punch without the actual player stats. Blame these idiots for bad management. Doing the best I can here.

Here are the East Team game notes for the 2024 East-West Shrine Game.

Quarterbacks:

The quarterback play for the East team was gross in a bad way. They lost 26-11 but it would have been way worse if it weren’t for a punt return touchdown.

Devin Leary is terrible. Can’t hit the broad side of the barn. The most boring 5/9 for 41 yards ever. He kinda looks like Trubisky the way he plays. Being somewhat mobile is the only thing he’s got going for him.

Jack Plummer can at least make some throws but he’s mostly terrible and not athletic. He’s the best of the bunch but not by much.

Austin Reed should have just been sent home for not belonging. 5/11 for 36 yards and a pick. I felt like I was watching a middle school player. He’s even worse than Bailey Zappe somehow.

Running Backs:

I got nothing.

Wide Receivers:

Cornelius Johnson is kinda interesting. Two catches for 21 yards. Had some moments at Michigan. Decent speed for his size. Bit raw but maybe worth a flier.

Tight Ends:

I don’t hate this Colorado State tight end Dallin Holker. He certainly moves better than literally any of the tight ends at the actual Senior Bowl. Finished the game with three receptions for 28 yards. That mark led the team. 6-foot-4, 235, and a big catch radius. Looked good during the season when they played Colorado. I’m not even kidding. He’s the first tight end I’ve seen this week who actually looks like he could be a real person who catches the ball at the position. That was certainly noteworthy.

Offensive Line:

Just keep an eye on Christian Mahogany. With this game, you’re always looking for one or two guys that pop. I think this was probably the best guard at the event. Just put it on the back burner for now.

Defensive Line:

Khalid Duke and Mohamed Kamara are definitely the two best pass rushers on this side. Hard to not see that. No sacks but they were the ones in the backfield creating pressure the most.

Linebackers:

Aaron Casey led the team with four solo tackles and six combined tackles. The Indiana product was around the ball the most. Didn’t blow me away but he was at least there making plays.

Cornerbacks:

Renaldo Green got hit for a terrible pass interference call on a tight end. It was during a third and long where it single-handedly extended the drive. Just a really bad play to make. Maybe not the end of the world but making a note of it. Stuff can’t happen.

Safeties:

Trey Taylor won the Pat Tillman Award at the event. Does it mean anything? Probably not but just letting you know.
