Patriots Hire Jerod Mayo As Belichick’s Successor

The Patriots parted ways with Bill Belichick and it turns out that his successor was on the staff this entire time. Jerod Mayo will become the next head coach of the New England Patriots. Mayo, 37, becomes the youngest head coach in NFL history. Mayo is one month younger than when the Rams hired Sean McVay.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:

Mayo has been with this organization for a long time. It’s worth noting that as the Patriots always wanted to hire someone that understands culture. Mayo was drafted by the Patriots in the first round back in 2008 with the 8th overall pick. The former Tennessee linebacker played for the Patriots from 2008 to 2015. He then joined the Patriots coaching staff as a linebacker coach in 2019.

He played his entire career with the Patriots appearing in 103 games and compiling 905 tackles. Mayo led the team in tackles in each of his first five seasons with the team.

It’s also worth noting that Robert Kraft deserves the benefit of the doubt here. His track record for hiring coaches speaks for itself. The last three coaches Kraft hired include Bill Parcells, Pete Carroll, and Bill Belichick. There isn’t another owner in the league that has that type of resume. Mayo now joins that list.

The only part surprising about this move is the fact that Kraft didn’t pursue Mike Vrabel. Once the Titans fired Vrabel, he felt like a very logical replacement. Instead, it’s Mayo’s time to shine.
