As the NBA is set to resume shortly, Alex has done a really good job of going over offseason needs. Weirdly enough, the offseason isn’t too far away either. I’ll take over the Boston Celtics and the list of needs isn’t too long. They’re very well in the conversation for corona champs 2020 with a young team that shouldn’t be affected by the break. Let’s take a look at the offseason agenda for the Boston Celtics.
Boston basically brings back the entire team next year. Brad Wanamaker is the only player that hits free agency. Boston should let him go and find an actual reliable backup point guard. Maybe that’s Tremont Waters or Carsen Edwards. Maybe that’s somebody in the draft. All I know is Wanamaker ain’t it.
The other given is Gordon Hayward. There’s no chance that he turns down his $34.18 million player option. Especially given the uncertainty with the cap. Hayward is coming back. It’s just a matter of him picking up the option.
Once again, the Celtics have too many draft picks. This time, they don’t have the roster spots. Boston owns the Memphis pick, Milwaukee pick, and their own. Could they trade up in the draft? Maybe but it’s regarded as a bad draft. Could they use those picks to flip into future years? Probably the smarter pick.
It’s not a complicated offseason for the Celtics. Essentially the entire team is already locked up for next year. The Celtics have their core and it’s really about trying to tinker with the bench. A staple of draft picks and young players could create some flexibility.
