Does Donovan Mitchell make sense for the New York Knicks?
Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard Donovan Mitchell has been a name heard all around the league regarding trade rumors, especially the New York Knicks. But after New York acquired OG Anunoby, does it really make sense for the Big Apple to go after another big-time player? Let’s break it down.
After acquiring Anunoby in exchange for RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and a second-round pick; the Knicks don’t have any depth in their lineup anymore. Was spending your two big young guards on Anunoby the best thing you could do? Absolutely not. What the Knicks are doing right now makes no sense, and here’s why.
New York has been in this pit of mediocrity lately. Acquiring Jalen Brunson was an A+ move. It moves them into a playoff-caliber team every single year, but having Julius Randle as your second option doesn’t seem like a championship-caliber squad.
Outside of Barrett, who is now gone, who was pretty much your only decent wing-like player, immediately turns your team into confusion and decelerates your progress to a championship. Acquiring Anunoby seems like a bit of a reach, especially when you give up arguably the best bench player in the NBA (Immanuel Quickley).
If the Knicks truly want to get maximum value out of trading away Quickley and Barrett, now is the time to make a championship-level roster move. As of right now, the Knicks aren’t beating the Cavaliers, Bucks, 76ers, Celtics, Heat or even Magic in a seven-game series, putting them in a very uncomfortable place in the standings.
They won’t get a lottery pick and will get bounced early in the playoffs. Here comes acquiring Donovan Mitchell. Bringing Mitchell to the Big Apple instantly makes the Knicks a championship squad. Bringing in the former No. 13 pick ascends the Knicks’ scoring and assists numbers into a new universe. Mitchell would play the two alongside Brunson, making them one of the most dangerous backcourts in the league.
Adding Mitchell would take immense heat off of Brunson and the rest of the Knicks’ scoring threats. It would completely balance the Knicks on both ends of the floor. With Anunoby now playing the three in New York, acquiring Mitchell would be the perfect and final piece to bring back the Knicks to glory.
