Jalen Milroe Took Serious Shots At Bill O’Brien

It’s safe to say that Jalen Milroe doesn’t like Bill O’Brien. The Alabama quarterback took serious shots at his former coordinator. (Gary Cosby Jr.-USA TODAY Sports)

Jalen Milroe Took Serious Shots At Bill O’Brien

Tommy Rees replaced Bill O’Brien as the offensive coordinator at Alabama this past year. Starting quarterback Jalen Milroe seems pretty happy with the switch. With O’Brien now with the Patriots, Milroe totally unloaded on him during a media session prior to the College Football Playoff.

The former head coach of the Houston Texans apparently talked down to Milroe. O’Brien said he should just change positions and forget about playing quarterback.

“All my life, even when I was in college,” Milroe told reporters. “My own offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien, told me I shouldn’t play quarterback. So, it’s a lot of things I can have motivation on, and that’s something I have motivation from.”

Reporter: “What was your reaction to Bill O’Brien telling you you shouldn’t play quarterback?”

Milroe: “How would you feel if I told you you sucked?”

Reporter: “I probably wouldn’t like it.”

Milroe: “OK then. So, that’s exactly how I felt. So, the biggest thing for me, be true to myself and stay the same. Nothing changed about me. Only thing that changed was I had an opportunity and I seized it.”

Not let’s totally paint O’Brien out to be the bad guy. Milroe isn’t exactly the most polished passer in the world. If Milroe was a perfect pocket passer, he wouldn’t have gotten benched this year. However, give Milroe and the entire coaching staff credit. They figured out what he can and can’t do and built an offense around his skillset.

On the season, Milroe completed 65.5% of his passes, 10.4 yards per attempt, and 226.5 yards per game with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. That’s not including the damage on the ground adding 468 yards and 12 touchdowns rushing.

Keep in mind also, O’Brien mostly worked with Bryce Young who started last year. Milroe wasn’t under center much during O’Brien’s reign as the OC in Tuscaloosa.
