David Mellor Talks How Fenway Park Gets Turned Into A Football Stadium
Fenway Park is arguably the most historic sporting event that exists today. Bowl season in college football might not be the same as it used to. However, the scenery at Fenway while they’re playing a football game is a sight to behold.
NESN recently caught up with Fenway Park director of grounds David Mellor. During that interview, Mellor spoke about everything that goes into transforming this beautiful ballpark into a football stadium.
“It takes a lot of teamwork and a lot of planning,” Mellor explained. “I’m very fortunate to have great support there. … There’s just a lot of people that are involved in putting this all together. It’s a lot of extensive planning and attention to detail. Safety and playability are our first priorities. We start after the baseball season is over. The mound comes out. (On) the infield skin, we put down a filter fabric so that the sod doesn’t cross-contaminate that clay. The warning track is graded. The sod matches that. The big roll of sod comes in.”
“Through the years, technology gets better,” Mellor added. “Same with groundskeeping.”

This year the Wasabi Fenway Bowl features SMU and Boston College. It’s a hell of a way for BC to end their season in that beautiful stadium. Of course, BC has to be bowl-eligible and at least play toward a .500 winning percentage to get a chance to play in that game.
