Dodgers Win The Yoshinobu Yamamoto Sweepstakes
There is a super team emerging in Los Angeles. The Dodgers didn’t just land Shohei Ohtani this Winter. They’re getting Yoshinobu Yamamoto too! LA has won the Yamamoto sweepstakes and have agreed to a 12-year contract worth $325 million. The deal contains multiple opt outs and the Dodgers will also have to pay the $51 million posting fee just to acquire him.
Ken Rosenthal of the terrible publication that is The Athletic was the first to report the news.
Yamamoto, 25, is a free agent unicorn. No qualifying offer is attached. At the ripe age of 25 just entering his prime. You just don’t find guys like this available on the free agent market. The rare nature of his free agency is what pushed the price up this high.
We’re also talking about an extremely talented arm too. Yamamoto won the equivalent of the Cy Young Award in Japan three years straight. Nobody in the NPB is on his level. He sported a 1.21 ERA during his final season in Japan. The only concern about Yamamoto has been the size. Will he be able to hold up over the entire duration of this contract being 5-foot-10 while starting every 5th day?
The Dodgers have had a hell of an offseason. This team has dropped over a billion big bucks just to land Ohtani and Yamamoto. That’s not even including the Tyler Glasnow addition/extension. The Dodgers are going to be insanely tough to beat. Especially when Ohtani joins that rotation. Good luck beating that team!
