Tyler Glasnow Trade To Dodgers Agreed, Pending Extension

Tyler Glasnow will overwhelmingly become the newest member of the Dodgers. LA and the Rays have agreed to a deal, which also includes outfielder Manuel Margot. If the pitcher signs an extension, Ryan Pepiot and Johnny Deluca will go the other way. Jeff Passan just confirmed this:

BREAKING: The Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays are in agreement on a trade to send RHP Tyler Glasnow and OF Manuel Margot to the Dodgers for RHP Ryan Pepiot and OF Jonny Deluca — contingent on Glasnow signing an extension with L.A., which is expected, sources tell ESPN.

In case you couldn’t tell, LA is all-in. Andrew Friedman is throwing caution into the wind and wants to win in Year One of the Shohei Ohtani era. His mind-blowing contract structure means this is likely the first of many moves. In particular, if they are able to pull off the signing of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, then their rotation goes from a question mark to an emphatic answer. You’d have to think a Clayton Kershaw reunion is bound to happen, making Walker Buehler and Bobby Miller a more than capable #4 and #5. They still have work to do, but the Dodgers are well on their way to one of the biggest offseasons we have ever seen.

Glasnow is clearly an October addition. For all of his injury woes, his stuff is electric when he’s healthy and clicking. Believe it or not, 2023 saw his career-bests in starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts. I am sure Dave Roberts will have no problem keeping the guy in bubble wrapped as long as he’s good to go once the regular season is over.

What’s Next In Tampa?

It’s clear that Kevin Cash wanted to offload some money this Winter. Getting both Glasnow and Margot off the books will help with that. You don’t need to be an expert to know that Tampa has won at the margins more than anyone in baseball over the last few years. The Rays have had a very quiet offseason to star but that must change with over $30 million coming off the books in this deal. Will they address starting pitching? A new shortstop with Wander Franco‘s future very uncertain? There’s a lot of different directions that they could move from here.
