Joe Flacco made his debut start with the Browns last week. Cleveland may have lost the game, but maybe all hope isn’t lost. I don’t want to get carried away here but I’m pretty sure that Flacco played the best game by a Browns quarterback all year. Can that actually continue and can Flacco actually help the Browns? Their playoff hopes might depend on it.
Flacco, 38, has superb arm strength. Even at this age, it’s obvious he can sling it. If the Browns can protect him, Flacco has the ability to stand in the pocket and throw darts. He’s always been able to and it sure doesn’t look like he’s lost much on his fastball.
Flacco threw for 254 yards in his first start with the Browns. Cleveland has one game all year with more passing yards and that was with Deshaun Watson when they kicked the snot out of Tennessee. Other than that, Flacco arguably has the best performance by a Browns quarterback all year.
The Browns are currently 7-5 and in the playoffs. As long as they’re in the hunt, Flacco should continue to start. The Browns defense needs to play their A game regardless of who starts at quarterback. This team needs to continue leaning on the ground game and limiting turnovers. If Flacco can do that while making 3-4 throws every game that wow you, this Browns team has a shot.
Again, I don’t want to get carried away but Browns fans should feel encouraged with Flacco thus far. Dorian Thompson-Robinson deserves playing time as long as Watson is hurt. He’s just going to have to wait his turn if Cleveland stays in the hunt. Flacco has had big game playoff performances in the past and gives Cleveland the best chance to win. I’m not sure how that can be denied.
