Luis Severino Signs with the Mets

Now ex-Yankee Luis Severino is heading to Queens, signing a one-year 13 million dollar deal with the Mets today per Jeff Passan. The 29-year-old faced a challenging year with the Yankees due to injuries, and ended the season with a 4-8 record, a 6.95 ERA, and a 1.64 WHIP in 89.1 innings, allowing 23 home runs in the process. Deal that is a far cry from his 40 million-dollar extension with the Yankees in 2019.

The Mets, who have been actively seeking pitching depth, have taken a flier on Severino to add depth to their rotation. Including Kodai Senga as the new Ace of the Mets’ staff and Jose Quintana. Severino’s arrival introduces a seasoned and potentially impactful arm to the team.

Severino’s fit

When healthy, Severino has proven to be a dominant force on the mound. Severino at his best is an innings-eating fireballer with his 97-plus mile-per-hour fastball. Despite recent setbacks in these last few seasons, including Tommy John Surgery in 2020. Which seems to have done a number on him requiring 18 months to return to the mound. Although the Mets should be optimistic that Severino can return to form. While he may not replicate the heights of his top 10 Cy Young voting performances in 2017 and 2018. A healthy and strong campaign will play in the Mets’ favor no matter how the Mets’ season plays out. A good season for Severino can mean a deadline trade piece, a playoff starter, or just a one-year experiment that doesn’t work out.

I believe in Severino to turn things around in Queens. A one-year prove-it deal can make or break the rest of his career. But as for right now the rest of the Mets’ offseason is unclear like many other teams.  But bringing in Luis Severino is a good low-risk high-reward signing for the Mets.
