Max Johnson transfers to North Carolina
After entering the transfer portal Sunday, quarterback Max Johnson has already found a new home, announcing Wednesday over social media that he was transferring to the North Carolina Tar Heels. The SEC transfer played his last two seasons at Texas A&M and two seasons at LSU before that.
Because he is a graduate transfer, he will be eligible to play immediately. This is huge for the Tar Heels, as Drake Maye will more than likely be making his way to the NFL draft. Obtaining an experienced quarterback was going to be a main priority for them and they got that taken care of early. Johnson will have two years of eligibility remaining.
The last two seasons have been unfortunate for Johnson, as both years ended early due to injury. His first year at Texas A&M ended early with a broken hand, so he took a redshirt. This past season, he appeared in eight games before suffering a rib injury, which again ended his season.
Despite the string of injuries the past two seasons, he has been able to put up some respectable numbers in his four years of college. In 22 SEC starts, he has 5,853 passing yards, 47 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Johnson attended UNC camps three years in a row when he was in high school and his dad, Brad Johnson, played high school football for Black Mountain, which is in North Carolina. Max’s dad Brad also won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his 15-year NFL career.
Despite Max’s experience, he may still have to earn his spot by winning a position battle with redshirt freshman Conner Harrell. Barring another injury or overall poor performance, Johnson should have the upper hand due to his time in the SEC.
If he gets the job, Johnson will have some tough shoes to fill as Drake Maye took college football by storm this year and will likely be drafted within the first ten picks.
