Patrick Kane has played the waiting game but finally has picked a landing spot for the remainder of the 2023-24 NHL Season. The future Hall of Famer winger has decided that he will sign with the Detroit Red Wings.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Johnston, the Red Wings have won the Patrick Kane sweepstakes.
My first thought when this deal went down… how big of a factor did Alex DeBrincat play? Of course, Kane and DeBrincat were teammates in Chicago. Now both of playing for a fierce rival in the Wings. DeBrincat’s presence in Detroit had to at least play a small part in Kane picking the Wings.
There was also that report that needs to be mentioned. You know, the one about the Rangers not wanting to bring Kane back. It’s important to mention that Kane is still coming off hip surgery. There is no guarantee he will get back to his old form. If anything, seeing Kane return to form is probably the least likely scenario.
The former Blackhawks legend is a slug on defense but he can still help in terms of passing and shooting, especially on the PP unit. He also fits well in Detroit given that he’s a right wing that they probably need to spark more offense.
Kane, 35, posted 57 points in 73 games a season ago which is basically his career low in any season he played more than 50 games. Time will tell how Kane impacts Detroit with this new deal in place.
