Patrick Kane undergoes hip procedure, expected to miss 4-6 months

Free agent Patrick Kane underwent hip resurfacing surgery and will most likely miss four-to-six months, agent Pat Brisson announced Thursday. According to Elliotte Friedman, Brisson said that Kane still “wants to play for a long time,” and the doctors are optimistic that can still happen.

Kane, 34, has been dealing with hip issues for the past couple of seasons, causing him to have his worst season since 2012-13, with only 57 points.

The expectation for Kane’s return is during or right after training camp, but only time will tell. Kane felt he was not 100 percent during the New York Rangers’ 2023 playoff run, and if he did, he would be more heavily involved in the offense. In seven games, Kane scored seven points with one goal and six assists.

“I look at that series and I know it’s like, if I felt a little bit better, I can like, help us win that series, you know?” he said after the series, per NBC Chicago’s Charlie Roumeliotis. “It’s almost like disappointing and depressing in a way, but that’s just kind of how I feel about it.”

Kane’s future with the Rangers is uncertain, as he is creeping up in age and has previously dealt with other injuries. In 2015, Kane broke his left clavicle after Florida Panthers defenseman Alex Petrovic hit him, lost his balance, and fell right into the boards.

Due to the cumulative injuries Kane has experienced, what is his worth coming into the 2023-24 season?

As an unrestricted free agent, any team can bring in the right winger. With Kane missing a significant amount of time during the offseason, it may cause the Rangers to not agree on a massive deal.

Injuries aside, the talented, sharp-shooting right winger would be a great addition to any NHL team. In Kane’s 17-year career, he has tallied 1,237 points with 451 goals and 786 assists. The question is, how much money are these teams willing to pay?

A possible team that would benefit from this acquisition would be the Eastern Conference Champions Florida Panthers and teaming up with Matthew Tkachuk. But only time will tell.
