Texas A&M is turning to a familiar face in hopes of turning the program around. The Aggies already parted ways with Jimbo Fisher despite the massive buyout clause. Duke head coach Mike Elko is back at Texas A&M and will be the new head coach of the program.
247 Sports were the first to report the news:
“The Texas A&M head coaching vacancy could soon be filled as the Aggies are in discussions with Duke’s Mike Elko to become the program’s next leader, according to multiple reports. The Devils Den’s Adam Rowe confirmed that Duke called a team meeting wherein Elko is expected to inform the team of his departure for the Texas A&M job.”
Elko, 46, previously spent time with the Aggies from 2018-21 where he served as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach. The New Jersey native will leave his position as the head coach at Duke behind. Elko’s success at Duke obviously helped him secure this gig. Elko went 16-9 during his tenure at Duke while inheriting a three-win team from the season before.
Elko has run a successful defense at Texas A&M before. Now he has to infuse that success throughout the entire program. The positive news is that this University has so many damn resources. If Elko can simply keep producing high recruiting classes while putting his own positive stamp on the program, he has a chance to win big despite how competitive the SEC is.
