The Rangers Don’t Want Patrick Kane And That Should Say Something

Patrick Kane is nearing a return and is expected to sign with a team soon. Of course, the future Hall of Famer underwent hip surgery this past offseason as he will look to rebound from a poor 2022-23 Season. As Kane is nearing a decision on his future, the Rangers have ruled themselves out before Kane picked a landing spot.

Larry Brooks of The New York Post reported the Rangers are not in the mix for Kane and don’t really have any interest in bringing him back. Doesn’t that say a lot?

We know Kane was a shell of himself last year but the Rangers saw all the warts. He’s the worst defensive forward in the league and the Rangers powerplay is buzzing better without him. Maybe we should ask how Kane would even help them.

The funny thing is Kane wants to go back. At least, that’s what it seems like. ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported that Kane would love to go back to the Rangers. It’s just kinda hard to go back to a place that doesn’t want you.

Kane, 35, notched 12 points in 19 games with the Rangers last year. It’s not a terrible point total but he provides absolutely nothing in terms of the intangibles of the game. No forechecking. No defense. No speed.

Also, nobody really comes back from this surgery. Ryan Kesler was done right after. Nicklas Backstrom just had to call it quits. The odds that Kane comes back and reverts to his old form feels unlikely.

The fact that the Rangers don’t want Kane back really should speak volumes. No doubt a future Hall of Famer, but those days are over. Let’s just stop pretending otherwise, please.
