Report: Texas A&M to fire Jimbo Fisher

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is expected to be fired by the school’s board of regents, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger was first to report Sunday morning.

Fisher will be owed the rest of his $76 million remaining on his contract. According to his contract, he will be owed over $19 million over the next 60 days and the remainder of his contract annually through 2031.

“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President [Mark] Welsh and then Chancellor [John] Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision,” Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork said in a statement. “We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

The Aggies are coming off a 51-10 win over Mississippi State, but the program is currently 6-4 after high expectations entering 2023. Texas A&M has Abilene Christian on its schedule next week before closing the season on the road at LSU.

He signed his 10-year contract in 2021, but went 19-15 in the three seasons since. In six years, he finished 45-25 with three bowl appearances (they will also be bowl-eligible this year). Fisher is 128-48 all-time as a head coach, but has recently lost the “quarterback whisperer” label he had at Florida State.
