The Big Ten has suspended Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh for the remainder of the 2023 regular season Friday, according to ESPN College Football Reporter Pete Thamel. The suspension comes amid allegations that Michigan conducted impermissible in-person scouting to steal signs.
Harbaugh was suspended because the Big Ten determined Michigan violated the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy.
Harbaugh will be able to coach throughout the week, but he is unable to attend games and coach from the sideline.
The suspension was made public as the Wolverines were traveling for the team’s upcoming top 10 matchup against Penn State, which kicks off on Nov. 11 at noon EST.
The three-game suspension will also keep Harbaugh off the sidelines as Michigan closes out its season against Maryland and Ohio State–crucial games to Michigan’s College Football Playoff ranking.
Thamel and Dan Murphy have reported that Michigan is expected to challenge the Big Ten’s ruling in court in the hopes that Harbaugh will be able to coach against Penn State.
Thamel later added the Big Ten did not suspend Harbaugh for his connection to the sign-stealing operation. At this point, the Big Ten does not have evidence he was involved. Instead, Harbaugh is being suspended as a punishment for the university.
Harbaugh was also suspended for the first three games of the regular season because of an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations. That suspension was self-imposed by the University of Michigan.
