I have an announcement. I am officially waving the white flag on Jonathan Huberdeau in fantasy hockey. The guy from Florida is gone for good. (Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports)

I Am Waving The White Flag On Jonathan Huberdeau In Fantasy Hockey

I have a confession to make. Unlike others in the industry, I have no problems exposing myself when I’m wrong. In reality, I’m not really wrong. It’s more of a late round gamble that just didn’t pan out. I picked Jonathan Huberdeau 144th pick in our fantasy hockey league. I’m officially waving the white flag. I dropped him and I’ve given up hope that this guy is ever going to be the guy we saw in Florida.

I listed Huberdeau as a bounceback candidate heading into this season. On paper, it made all the sense in the world. We’re talking about a guy that notched 115 points during his last year in Florida. Huberdeau notched just 55 in his first year in Calgary. Darryl Sutter literally hated him. Now that Sutter is gone, surely his point total would at least meet somewhere in the middle, right?

Nope. Not even close. He’s just not good. Incredible pure passer of the puck. It’s just not going to work in Calgary. He can’t do anything other than pass. He’s a -12 in 12 games with 6 points. It’s not all on him. The Flames stink but his warts are so obvious. Can’t defend, can’t forecheck, scared to pull the trigger and shoot. It’s not happening.

The last game Calgary played they benched him for the entire third period and the team came back and won.

Outside of taking a flier on him as a daily streamer, I have no idea how you carry this guy on your fantasy hockey roster. I don’t see how the guy turns it around. Especially since it seems like the Flames are going to sell off pieces too.

More than anything, the only thing that’s obvious is that Calgary really misses Matthew Tkachuk. They’re not the same team without him. A rebuild is coming and they’re totally stuck with Huberdeau who is on the hook for $10.5 million through 2031. Good luck!
