Craig Counsell Defends His Move To The Cubs

The Craig Counsell to the Cubs news feels like it came out of nowhere. Especially after it felt like David Ross was safe. The former Brewers manager has a lot of explaining to do and did the best he possibly could when talking about the move to Chicago.

“I needed and wanted a new professional challenge,” Counsell said, according to Steve Megargee of The Associated Press. “At the same time, I’m grateful to be part of this (Milwaukee) community. And that’s going to continue, hopefully, because it has nothing to do with baseball, that part of it. I’m looking forward to being part of a new community and hopefully impact our community well, too.”

Counsell says he also totally understands why fans in Milwaukee are mad. He’s not oblivious to that.

“I understand people are mad. That’s part of this,” Counsell said. “That’s part of what makes this hard. But sometimes you just have to try to think above that and do what you think in your heart is right for you and the people around you.”

A few things to go over before we close:

A: Counsell took the bag. Can’t blame him for that. The Cubs are paying him a record salary after he signed a five-year, $40 million contract. That’s a historical number so credit to him for getting his money.

B: Sports Illustrated had a piece recently that tells a lot of the story.

“If he ever managed anywhere else (than Milwaukee), the Cubs have always been his dream job,” a source told Sports Illustrated.

It appears that staying in the Midwest was also really important to him. This job checks a lot of those boxes.

C: The Brewers appear to be headed towards a rebuild soon. It doesn’t sound like Counsell wanted to be part of the downswing.
