Why Did Craig Counsell Turn Down The Mets?
It was a bit surprising that Craig Counsell didn’t wind up as the manager of the Mets. Counsell ended up picking the Cubs and the Mets ended up settling for Carlos Mendoza. Now that the dust has settled, key details are being leaked and they are fascinating.
Why did Counsell turn the Mets down? Well, we have the answer now. Sports Illustrated had an exclusive story and I’ll share what you need to know below.
“There were two problems with that assumption. Stearns did not hire Counsell in Milwaukee. He inherited him when he was named GM in September 2015. They worked well together but were not particularly close, especially as Milwaukee emphasized analytics more in game decisions. Moreover, the Mets’ advantage of money was offset by geography and where the team stands on the winning curve. It is not a plum job despite plum money.”
“That wasn’t the case. He was all but out over the past few days. New York was not at the top of his list.”
There is your answer. Stearns wasn’t the one that hired Counsell and apparently, the two weren’t super close. Stearns is a nerd and Counsell wasn’t exactly going to roll over and accept all of his ideas.
Counsell wanted to stay in the midwest too and once the Cubs ponied up, it was pretty much ball game over. All of the reports indicating that Stearns and Counsell were super close appear to be false. Especially given the way the events have transpired since.
