Pete Carroll Is ‘Concerned’ About Geno Smith’s Turnovers

Since joining the Seattle Seahawks, quarterback Geno Smith has balled out. Not just that, but he has avoided turnovers and has been one of the most accurate QBs in the NFL. His play during the months of late October and early November doesn’t reflect the same.

In the last four games, Smith has thrown four touchdowns and six interceptions, completing 62.3 percent of his passes. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is worried about Smith’s recent run of turnover-filled games.

Yeah, I am concerned about that,” Carroll said Sunday after his team’s abysmal 37-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Smith finished 13-for-28 with 157 yards, zero touchdowns and two turnovers. The Seahawks’ offense was outgained 515-151 yardage-wise and only had six first downs.

The one on the fumble, that’s a pass-rush deal,” Carroll said. “The interception, he threw it up and the guy that’s been making the interceptions made another one. But that’s not the direction for us to be going in. Up until this game, it took us to first place, whatever the heck we’ve been doing. And we didn’t play like a first-place team today. With those kinds of turnovers, it’s really hard to win.

Of course, we can’t blame everything on Smith. The Ravens’ defense was absolutely relentless, only allowing 16 yards rushing from Kenneth Walker the whole game. According to ESPN, Smith faced pressure on 49 percent of his dropbacks, as Seattle’s offensive line surrendered four sacks.

It’s tough,” Smith said after the game. “It sucks. We were looking forward to this matchup, and I just feel like we didn’t play our best football today. Obviously, we made a ton of mistakes and a lot of things we need to correct.”

The Seahawks sit at 5-3, but are they legit contenders? They’ve pulled out two impressive wins over a talented Detroit Lions team, and a defensive juggernaut in the Cleveland Browns. However, Smith has been the definition of inconsistent and has struggled mightily against the best teams he’s played.

Their remaining schedule is absolutely brutal. Some of their games include the Commanders, Cowboys, Rams, Steelers, Eagles, and two against the 49ers. Smith is going to have to clean up his game really fast if the Seahawks want to get in the playoff picture.
