Cam Akers feared to have an Achilles injury

Absolutely brutal news for running back Cam Akers, as Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters after their game Sunday that they fear he suffered an Achilles injury, according to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo. It would mark the second of his career.

This is just a huge blow for Akers, who can’t seem to get on the right path when it comes to staying healthy. During his 2021 season with the Los Angeles Rams, a season where some expected him to break out, he saw it end due to an Achilles tear.

He then made an insanely quick recovery, only being out six months, and looked to get his career back on track. It then became clear that Rams head coach Sean McVay and the Rams had no use for him as evidenced by the multiple healthy scratches he saw.

He was then traded to the Vikings where he hoped to get a fresh start and some more carries. Seeing some increase in workload while still behind Alexander Mattison. He was able to turn 30 carries into 113 yards and a TD as he slowly started to work his way into this offense.

But alas, tragedy has struck again with Akers seemingly tearing his Achilles again. With it now being the second time he’s suffered an Achilles injury before turning 25-years-old, the possibility of retirement isn’t off the table.

It’s a tough recovery process. But he’s shown the ability to defy the odds in terms of recovery time. Aside from all that, what will his value be? He will be 25 coming off a second Achilles tear, if that’s the official prognosis. I don’t know many teams that are gonna be chomping at the bit to add that to their roster.

You certainly hope this isn’t the end of the line for Cam Akers. But at this point, it’s becoming a real possibility, especially with how undervalued runningbacks are already in today’s NFL.

The football gods are ruthless and demand sacrifices. For whatever reason, Akers is one of those players who is seemingly always being punished. I don’t know why that is, I just hope it turns around for him soon and doesn’t derail his career.
