Caleb Williams Wants Partial Ownership of the NFL Team That Drafts Him
There is no doubt that Caleb Williams is a star player and one of the best players in college football. As long as he can stay healthy and continue to play well, he will be drafted No. 1 overall in 2024, if he declares.
It may seem too weird to say “if he declares,” but there has been speculation that he may stay in college for one more year. His father has even said that he doesn’t want his son to play for the Arizona Cardinals if they have the No. 1 overall pick.
On top of making a bold statement like that, Williams now reportedly wants partial ownership in the team that drafts him. This will almost certainly not happen, as Aaron Rodgers attempted to do the same thing and was denied by the league. Players or employees getting a piece of the team is not allowed per NFL rules.
If Aaron Rodgers can’t get a stake in a team, I don’t know what makes Williams think he can. People can argue about his ability and how he will pan out in the NFL all they want. Despite people’s predictions though, we know one thing for certain, he hasn’t achieved anything in the NFL yet.
On numerous occasions, we have seen players absolutely ball out in college and become a bust in the NFL. This is just how it goes and I’m not saying I think Williams will be a bust, but he has to prove himself before making demands like this.
The only leverage that Williams has is another year of eligibility. He can return to USC for his senior year and make millions of dollars through NIL. Although going to the draft makes more sense, making millions and being the most popular person at USC doesn’t sound that bad either.
Although a lot of this could just be people overreacting, it is weird to see such a talented player acting this way. Caleb Williams has the potential to pioneer a new way for high draft picks to get paid, or he could end up looking like a complete fool. Either way, lots of people will be waiting to see how this story unfolds.
