Kim Ng Will Not Return As Marlins General Manager

After a successful season and making history with the Marlins, Kim Ng declined her mutual option for 2024 and parted ways with the team.

Ng made history multiple times with the Marlins and this decision came as a bit of a surprise to some people. She was the first female General Manager in the major professional North American sports leagues, and she became the first female General Manager to lead a team to a playoff berth this season.

Ng and the Marlins parted without any drama, but there was a conflict of interest that was brought up during an interview.

“Last week, Bruce Sherman and I discussed his plan to reshape the Baseball Operations department. In our discussions, it became apparent that we were not completely aligned on what that should look like and I felt it best to step away.,” Ng told The Athletic’s Tyler Kepner.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Marlins family and its fans for my time in South Florida. This year was a great step forward for the organization, and I will miss working with manager Skip Shumaker and his coaches as well as all of the dedicated staff in baseball operations and throughout the front office. They are a very talented group and I wish them great success in the future.”

Ng didn’t want a president of baseball operations brought in, as that would put her in a backseat regarding decision-making. She knew that requesting to stay as the top decision-maker would most likely result in her having to walk away.

It is unclear at the moment where Ng will end up, but she will likely find a new home quickly. She’s had a successful career and there have been reports that she could be a good candidate for the Boston Red Sox. Boston recently fired Chaim Bloom, who was the chief baseball officer and has been struggling to find a replacement.

It is also important to mention that Ng was a part of the Dodgers front office when Alex Cora, the current Red Sox manager, played there. Boston has a big decision coming up and the timing of Ng walking from the Marlins could make their decision that much harder to make.
