Mike Williams suffers season-ending ACL tear

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 NFL Season with a torn ACL, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Williams was carted off the field at the beginning of the fourth quarter in the Chargers’ Week 3 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

At the time of his injury, Williams was having his best game of the season. In three quarters, Williams had seven catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. In total, he will finish the season with 19 receptions for 249 yards and a touchdown.

Williams is expected to be ready for training camp next season, according to Schefter.

The Chargers will now be forced to rely on Keenan Allen, Josh Palmer and Quentin Johnston to hold down their receiving room.

The Chargers receiving room is not in an awful position. Allen is an elite veteran, Palmer has consistently been given opportunities in past seasons, and Johnston is an intriguing rookie. Obviously, losing Williams is a massive sting, but Los Angeles still has a capable group of pass-catchers.

Johnston will be the most interesting piece of the Chargers’ offense moving forward. The high-upside rookie has only logged five receptions for 26 yards through three games. If he can live up to his offseason hype, Los Angeles’ passing game will be in a much better position.

At 1-2, Los Angeles needs to quickly find the win column to be able to make the playoffs in a stacked AFC. Williams’ injury provides the Chargers with another hurdle as its season progresses. It does not help that star running back Austin Ekeler has missed two games with an ankle injury.
