Mbappé, Messi and Neymar Lacked Support At PSG

The superstar trio of Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Neymar lacked the support that they deserved while at PSG, according to the club’s former sporting director Leonardo.

Although the trio were touted for greatness at PSG, they fell short of their lofty expectations. While they did win two Ligue 1 titles together the last few years, they failed miserably in the Champions League.

While winning the Ligue 1 is great, PSG is aspiring to finally win the Champions League and thought that the Mbappé, Messi and Neymar attacking line would finally bring them to the promised land. This never happened, however, and PSG is now in a state of transition as the club looks to move on after both Messi and Neymar’s departures this summer.

While it would be easy to call PSG’s experiment with the three superstars a failure, former PSG sporting director Leonardo disagrees.

“People, they need to feel comfortable. These players need a state of good spirits, they need to feel support, they need to be recognized,” Leonardo told Brazilian publication Ge. “And the ones who do that are the club, us, and the coaches.”

Leonardo defended the three players with this statement, arguing that PSG did not do enough to support its superstars.

This does go hand in hand with the comments Neymar made recently, claiming that he and Messi “lived through hell” while at PSG. Messi also apparently struggled with the move from Barcelona to Paris.

If what Leonardo is saying is true, then it makes sense why PSG struggled so much in the Champions League. Mbappé, Messi and Neymar could have done great things while in Paris. Sadly, however, they never clicked, and we are all left wondering about what could have been.
