Does Trey Lance Have Any Dynasty Value With The Cowboys?

I’m not sure who had Trey Lance to Dallas on their bingo cards. Of course, in fantasy football, we have to play with the cards that we’re dealt. With Lance now in Dallas, does the former North Dakota State product have any dynasty value now that he’s with the Cowboys? Let’s talk about it.

Everybody has their own opinion on Lance. I would probably say I’m on the lower end of that spectrum. If Kyle Shanahan couldn’t figure out what to do with the guy, he probably sucks. We’re talking about the same guy that guided Matt Ryan to his only MVP Award. We’re talking about the same guy that just went undefeated in the regular season with the last pick in the draft. That coach.

It’s hard to feel good about anything that Lance has put out on tape. He looks terrible this preseason. Even the most optimistic Lance believers have to be willing to admit at this point that he’s clearly not ready to play. Even if you’re taking a flier on Lance, you have to be willing to let the guy rot on the bench for a long time.

If you’re taking a shot on Lance, your best case scenario is that he sits behind Dak Prescott for two years and then takes the job over. I guess that’s possible. I’m just not sure I’d count on it. Lance is under contract next year and is a lock to have his 5th-year option declined the following season. Once that happens, there is no guarantee he’s even still on the roster after that.

Two things are really going to have to happen here.

A: Lance needs to improve. If he doesn’t improve, it won’t matter even if he’s on the field.

B: Dak will need to collapse. I actually think B is far more likely than A. Mostly because Dak isn’t a runner anymore. During the first three years of Dak’s career, he scored six rushing touchdowns in each season. He’s a shadow of that version of himself. I’m not sure he’s the type of guy that can pull a Brady and play until he’s 40. Dak needs his mobility and likely will regress like Russell Wilson has. He also carries a $59 million cap hit next year. Dallas could decide they want to move off that. I wouldn’t rule that out.

I think more than anything, patience will have to be stressed here. Lance has a shot but as I said in my other post, he’s two years away from being two years away. He needs to be on the Jordan Love plan. If you’re willing to wait, maybe Lance has some value. Especially because he’s not a zero in the ground game. Just don’t expect Lance to help you in dynasty formats any time soon.
