Darren Waller is a mystery player for me entering the 2023-24 NFL Season. Waller is in a totally different situation and really hasn’t been a super reliable fantasy commodity over the last two years. Should you buy stock in Waller entering your fantasy football draft?
Waller, 30, is obviously talented. That part isn’t really the question. On the high end, Waller could very well be the TE1 in fantasy. That’s not out of the range of outcomes here. The Giants don’t exactly have a wide receiver room that inspires a ton of confidence. Waller could easily lead this team in targets and touchdowns.
The Giants are such a tough team to project heading into the year. Brian Daboll deserves respect after the job he did with Daniel Jones this past year. It’s also not a roster that’s flush with talent. Waller is probably going to be asked to do a lot in this offense and that should be encouraging for fantasy managers.
The downside is Waller hasn’t really shown he’s the fantasy game changer that you need to invest resources into this player. Waller was unbelievable in 2020, but otherwise never has been a league winner. The former Georgia Tech product has never scored more than three touchdowns in a season outside of that 2020 campaign. That right there is a huge problem. Add in the fact that I think the Giants might be semi high on Daniel Bellinger. What if an under the radar tight end steals some targets?
This is one of those players that I have no idea what to do with in fantasy. I like the upside play and it’s why I’d be higher than the consensus here. I actually have Waller ranked as TE2 in fantasy, but I don’t feel confident in it. Waller needs to stay healthy and needs to find the end zone. The Giants are going to have to be more explosive offensively too.
At the end of the day, the Giants traded for this guy for a reason. He’s also an easy target to trust for a quarterback in Jones that we don’t really trust. Coaching just matters and I have to believe that Daboll will find a way to get him open.
