David Krejci Announces Retirement
The Boston Bruins are going to look very different down the middle of the ice when they open the 2023-24 NHL season. Patrice Bergeron has already announced his retirement. Now David Krejci will do the same. It will be the first time since 2005-06 that the Bruins will have neither in the lineup.
The Bruins Twitter account released a statement following the news of Krejci hanging up the skates.
“After 15 full NHL seasons I have decided to retire from the best league in the world.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cam Neely and for allowing me to take my time with my decision and Don Sweeney announcement.
I also want to thank the Jacobs family and the entire Bruins organization for believing in me over and over again and giving me the opportunity to be part of this amazing family for so many years.
When I was drafted in 2004, I had no idea that I would be working with such incredible and driven people who would lead us to 3 Stanley Cup Finals, and winning the ultimate goal in 2011.
I want to thank the media I really appreciate all of you even if I don’t like speaking too much I will miss you.
And to Bruins fans and the city of Boston THANK YOU. You have always treated me with nothing but respect and I will be forever grateful. I will miss playing in front of you, but I am and always will be a Bruin.”
Outside of a one year stint in Czechia, Krejci spent his entire 16 year NHL career in Boston. The veteran center finishes his career with 231 goals and 786 points in 1,032. Of course, Krejci was an enormous part of the 2011 Stanley Cup team where he posted 12 goals and 23 points in 25 playoff games.
I’m not sure how the Bruins are going to replace these two. The current depth down the middle in Boston consists of Pavel Zacha, Charlie Coyle, Morgan Geekie, and Jesper Boqvist. It’s a far cry from what Boston has had over the last 15+ years. Are the Bruins even a playoff team without Krejci and Bergeron?
