Ronald Jones fails drug test due to heart condition medicine

After being suspended for two games due to violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy, Ronald Jones unveils why he failed the drug test.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy released a statement regarding Jones’ suspension and the Cowboys running back room.

“We’re not just going to hit a bump and give up on the path,” McCarthy said, via ESPN. “We want to see these young guys. I want to see them play in games.”

The Cowboys’ running backs have been quite the hot topic in the organization. Tony Pollard, the team’s starting running back, is in need of a new contract extension. The breakout star was recently placed under the franchise tag, but with the running back market crashing, it is unlikely he gets a deal done soon. Dallas also added Deuce Vaughn to their running back room. The Cowboys drafted Vaughn with the 212th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft following a prolific career at Kansas State.

Jones was suspended for two games by the NFL for violating the league’s PED policy. He released a statement regarding his heart condition and the possibility of an appeal.

“We tried to appeal. I asked for a re-test, sample my blood, my health concerns and they didn’t really look at it,” Jones said. “I think there needs to be more protection for the players because if you have health issues, we’re a human being outside of football and we have real-life issues, too. My family suffers from heart disease.

“I just want to clear my name in terms of I’m not cheating the game of football. It’s literally a prescription medicine.”

Even with the suspension, Jones is still available and ready for Dallas Cowboys training camp. He will also be available for play during the Cowboys’ preseason games.

“We obviously were aware of the situation,” McCarthy said. “We support him and we’ll work through this. But as far as how the team is going to shake out, I mean, we have a lot of work to do. But we clearly understand the rules that go with a suspension.”

Jones is currently listed as the Cowboys third running back in their depth chart behind Pollard and Malik Davis. The 25-year-old running back will be out against the New York Giants and the New York Jets in week one and two.
