Manchester City Legend David Silva Retires
Manchester City legend David Silva announced his retirement from professional soccer Thursday.
The 37-year-old Spaniard has called it quits after a long, storied career. He made a total of 869 professional appearances while playing for Valencia, Eibar, Celta Vigo, Manchester City and Real Sociedad. He scored 156 goals, provided 226 assists for teammates and won 20 trophies during his career.
Unfortunately for Silva, he is not going out on his own terms. He suffered a serious knee injury during his pre-season training with Real Sociedad. At his age, he has decided it is best to call it quits and move on to the next stage of his life.
“Today is a sad day for me,” Silva said on social media. “Today it is time to say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to. Today it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues, who are like family to me. I will miss you very much.”
Most of Silva’s success came while at Manchester City. He made 436 caps for City, scoring 77 goals. His attacking prowess and remarkable vision helped City win four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups. He also has a statue outside of the Etihad Stadium, showing just how much of a club legend he really is.
Silva also had great success with the Spanish national team. He earned 125 caps for Spain and was part of the Spanish squads that won the 2010 World Cup plus the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
Silva is not the only legendary Spanish player to retire this summer. Fellow midfielder Cesc Fàbregas has also retired at the age of 36. Like Silva, he had an illustrious career for both club and country.
He won multiple major trophies while playing for clubs such as Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea. He was also a part of the Spanish squads that won the 2010 World Cup and 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
