Notre Dame, Chicago Bears Legend Johnny Lujack Dies At 98

The sports world mourns the loss of a football legend, as Johnny Lujack passed away at the age of 98 Tuesday. Lujack’s passing leaves an indelible mark on the sport, with fans and players alike honoring his exceptional career and contributions to football.

Lujack’s football journey began in his high school years, where he showcased exceptional talent on the field. He continued to hone his skills at the University of Notre Dame, where he would go on to become one of the most celebrated players in the school’s history.

In 1947, his exceptional performances led Notre Dame to an undefeated season and secured him the prestigious Heisman Trophy. His ability to lead the team with poise, precision and remarkable athleticism endeared him to fans across the nation.

Following his collegiate success, Lujack subsequently embarked on a remarkable NFL career. In 1948, he joined the Chicago Bears, where he continued to impress with his powerful arm and football IQ. His dedication and skills were evident on the field, earning him accolades and respect from his peers.

Lujack was an exceptional athlete. He was one of the NFL’s best all-around players, playing offense, defense and special teams. As a rookie, Lujack intercepted eight passes while playing defensive back. In 1949, he led the NFL with 2,658 passing yards and 23 touchdowns while playing quarterback. In 1950, he led the NFL with 11 rushing touchdowns.

Johnny Lujack’s impact extended beyond the field. His humility, sportsmanship and dedication inspired aspiring football players across generations. Throughout his life, he remained connected to the sport, mentoring young athletes at Notre Dame.
