Mavericks Acquire Grant Williams Via Three-Team Sign-And-Trade

The sin of Malcolm Brogdon continues to spread over and over again. As if costing the team Marcus Smart because Brogdon couldn’t pass his physical in time wasn’t worse enough. Now because Brogdon’s cap hit was higher than Smart’s, the Celtics were too close to the second apron to keep Grant Williams. Now he’s gone too.

The Dallas Mavericks are executing a sign-and-trade for Grant Williams. The Spurs are also involved and will be taking back Reggie Bullock as a salary dump. On the way to Boston, a few lousy second round picks.

Shams Charania of The Athletic was the first to report the news:

Woj later added that Boston will acquire two second round picks in the deal. The picks will come in 2024, 2025, and 2028. Who knows where the picks are coming from. Maybe San Antonio since they are getting the 2030 swap.

I don’t know how the Celtics are going to replace Williams. Offensively the guy is limited but posted shooting numbers of 45.4% from the field and 39.5% from 3-point range. Williams was the best 3-point shooter from a year ago. That Celtics bench is looking even thinner at the wing position. I genuinely don’t know what they will do if Sam Hauser stinks.

The Mavs have accomplished their goal. They have added more wing defenders to surround Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic. With the signing of Grant Williams and the draft addition of Marquette’s Olivier-Maxence Prosper? Consider that mission accomplished.
