Timo Meier agrees to extension with Devils

Timo Meier has finally ended the rumors. After acquiring him at the deadline, the New Jersey Devils will sign the former Sharks winger on an eight-year deal worth $8.8 million, Pierre LeBrun confirmed the deal Wednesday

There is just no stopping Tom Fitzgerald this Summer. The Devils still have $10.2 million in cap space to bring back their remaining free agents. It’s a bit of a crunch, but if anyone can find a way it’s Fitz. For at least next season, the Devils’ top six looks absolutely lethal.

In my eyes, the addition of Tyler Toffoli puts their attack up there with Toronto, Edmonton and Tampa as the best of the best. With their $2.3 million dead cap coming off the books and another rise in the cap in 2024, this group will age beautifully.

At 26-years-old, this deal looks like it will be an underpay sooner rather than later. Check out the JFresh report to see just why:

His 66 points in 78 games doesn’t tell the full story–40 of those were goals and a full season with this squad should reap instant benefits. He fits like a hand in a glove with either Jack Hughes or countryman Nico Hischier.

Dougie Hamilton is an elite defenseman who will deliver him the puck in the right places. If I was a Devils fan, I could not ask for a better offseason. They’ll have a great shot at going far in 2024 and are incredibly well-positioned to have many more bites at the apple.

Meier definitely deserves this payday. At 22, he put up 66 points in 2018-2019. The skill has always been there. Now, he’s in a great environment with linemates that complement him very well. While things didn’t go great against Carolina in the second round, every team needs some heartbreak before climbing the mountain.

Look no further than Vegas. They lost in the final in their first year and came up short for years before finally reaching the top. It’s gonna be a lot of fun in Jersey for a long time.

Timo Meier has gotten a well-deserved raise. And the Devils have completed one of their best deals in recent memory. If they really wanted to, Jersey could keep adding more pieces to this group. It’s just a matter of the cap not rising fast enough.
