After long careers of success, this moment is one that will last a lifetime. A moment that you dream of as a kid. The Hockey Hall of Fame announced their class of 2023 this week, which includes one general manager, one coach and five players.
Hitchcock’s induction is no surprise to a lot in the hockey community. In the last 20 years, Hitchcock coached a variety of teams, including the 1998-99 Dallas Stars, who would win the Stanley Cup in controversial fashion. Hitchcock would also win three Olympic Gold Medals and one World Cup Gold Medal.
Pierre Lacroix wasn’t known for his time on the ice, but rather his time behind the glass. Lacroix is responsible for one of the biggest trades in NHL history and forming one of the most dominating teams in the early 2000s. Lacroix would trade for goaltender Patrick Roy in a famous move from the Montreal Canadiens, he would then go on to win the Stanley Cup that same year. Pierre would then head to the President’s role for the Avalanche in 2006, but only seven years later he would retire from Hockey.
Known for his competitive fire and unmatched athleticism, Tom Barrasso has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Although Barrasso’s stats weren’t the best, sitting at a career .892 save percentage and 3.24 GAA, he indeed brought the fire. Barrasso would be named a Vezina nominee five times in his career and played over 750 games in the net.
The most recent player in this class comes in with Henrik Lundqvist. King Henrik, a fan favorite, spent his entire career with the New York Rangers. He would go on to stop over 23,500 shots in his lengthy career and accumulate 459 regular season wins. For more information on Lundqvist’s Hall of Fame journey, click here.
Caroline Ouellette has become one of the best scorers in Women’s hockey history. Ouellette, the Canadian native, quickly rose to stardom in hockey and won four Olympic Gold Medals while recording 1.3 points per game. She also would go on to win six World Championship Gold Medals and four CWHL championships.
Turgeon is most known for his scoring from the 90s to the early 2000s. With over 1,300 points under his belt, Turgeon amassed 40-goal seasons thrice during his career, with one season with 58. Turgeon spent most of his time with the Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders and St. Louis Blues in the early 90s-to-early 2000s.
In what seems to be the year of the goaltender, Mike Vernon ends our list. Vernon wasn’t the biggest guy on the ice, but he knew how to stop a puck, and he did for 20 years. The now 60-year-old spent most of his time with the Calgary Flames, eventually cementing himself as a fan favorite. On top of that, Vernon leads the Flames to their first-ever Stanley Cup in 1989.
